What we set out to achieve
Social Status is a social media analytics platform for agencies and brands. Good product, but invisible on Google. The goal was to build backlinks that would get their product pages and blog content ranking for the social media analytics keywords that marketers and agency teams search for when they're evaluating tools.
Where Social Status started
October 2021: about 600 organic visitors a month. Social Status had solid analytics features but almost no backlink profile to speak of. Their content was good enough to rank — it just didn't have the authority behind it. Meanwhile, Sprout Social, Hootsuite, and Buffer were sitting on thousands of referring domains each.

We targeted the social media analytics and marketing space with four link building tactics running in parallel over 34 months.
Editorial Link Insertions
We found existing articles about social media analytics and reporting that were already ranking, then got Social Status linked from inside them. These weren't new posts — they were established pages with traffic, so the links carried more weight.
Guest Posting
We placed guest posts on marketing and social media publications, with each article linking back to Social Status's product and feature pages. The posts had to be good enough that editors wanted to publish them on their own merits — the links came naturally from that.
High-Authority Backlinks
HubSpot, Cloudways, Venngage — all DR 80+. A single link from one of these sites did more for Social Status's domain authority than 10 links from lower-DR domains. These placements were the foundation the rest of the campaign built on.
Listicle Placements
We got Social Status into "Social Media Tools" and "Social Media Analytics" roundups that rank on page 1. Being listed next to Sprout Social and Hootsuite in these articles did more for brand credibility than any amount of cold outreach could.
Obstacles we overcame
Niche Market Positioning
Social media analytics is a sub-niche within social media tools. Too narrow and you run out of link targets. Too broad and the links don't move rankings for analytics-specific keywords. We had to find the right balance — articles about social media reporting and measurement, not just general social media advice.
Competing Against Established Tools
Sprout Social, Hootsuite, Buffer — they've been featured on every major marketing publication for years. We targeted the same caliber of sites. If a competitor had a link from a publication, we worked to get Social Status on there too. Over 34 months, that closed the gap.

91 links over 34 months works out to about 2-3 per month. Not aggressive, not flashy. But the Ahrefs chart shows what steady link building does — a gradual upward trend with no dips or penalties.
High-DR Links Accelerate Domain Authority
The HubSpot and Cloudways links didn't just help the pages they pointed to. DR gains from those placements lifted rankings across Social Status's entire site — blog posts, feature pages, even the pricing page started moving up.
