How to Post on Reddit Without Getting Banned (2026)

TL;DR

To post on Reddit: pick the subreddit, choose a post type, write a plain title, add flair, submit. Whether it survives depends on the account, not the content. Reddit's content policy has eight rules and sets no karma minimum, while subreddits set their own gates through AutoModerator and rarely document them. The 9:1 rule is guidance from Reddit's self-promotion wiki, not policy. Build comment history first, post text rather than links, disclose who you work for, and stay in the comments for the first hour.

To post on Reddit: pick the subreddit, choose a post type, write a title that says what the post is, add flair if the community uses it, and submit. The mechanics take a minute. Whether the post survives depends on the account behind it and the rules of that specific community, which is where brands come unstuck.

Posting matters more than it used to because threads outlive the week they're written. Profound found that 99% of ChatGPT's Reddit citations point to individual threads, not to subreddits or profiles, so a post that lands keeps being retrieved long after it stops getting upvotes. One that gets removed is worth nothing at all.

This guide covers the posting mechanics, the rules that actually trigger removals, and what to do after you hit submit. For how posting fits into a wider plan, read our Reddit marketing strategy guide.

How to post on Reddit, step by step

The mechanics of how to post on Reddit take about a minute. Open the subreddit you want to post in, click Create Post, and pick the type. Reddit gives you three that matter: a text post, a link post, and an image or video post. Write the title, fill the body, apply flair if the community uses it, then submit. Everything that decides the outcome happens before and after that click.

Reddit post types and when each one works for a brand

Post typeBest forRisk for brandsNote
Text postQuestions, teardowns, data you're sharing openlyLowThe safest format, and the one most likely to be cited later
Link postSharing a genuinely useful external resourceHighMany subreddits restrict or ban these from new accounts
Image or videoScreenshots, charts, short demosMediumWorks in visual subreddits, reads as advertising in discussion ones
Comment replyAnswering a question somebody already askedLowestNot a post, but it's where most brand value on Reddit comes from

For most SaaS brands the text post is the right default. It keeps the value on Reddit rather than asking people to leave, which is the behaviour both moderators and readers reward.

The body accepts Markdown, so two asterisks make bold, a hyphen starts a list, and a greater-than sign quotes text. Keep paragraphs to two or three lines, because Reddit is read on phones and a wall of text gets scrolled past. Headers work in long posts, though in most communities a long post needs a reason to be long.

Flair is not optional where it exists. Many subreddits run an AutoModerator rule that removes any post without flair after a few minutes, with no notification. If the Create Post screen shows a flair selector, use it, and pick the tag that matches what you wrote rather than the one that sounds most interesting.

Two other toggles matter occasionally. Mark a post NSFW if it contains anything a work filter would catch, since mislabelling is a fast removal. And check whether the community allows scheduled posts, because some treat them as automation.

Choosing the right subreddit to post in

Posting in the wrong community is the most common reason a good post fails. Relevance is judged narrowly on Reddit: r/SaaS, r/Entrepreneur and r/smallbusiness overlap in audience and differ sharply in what they tolerate, and a post that does well in one can be removed in the next within minutes.

Pick one community per post and write for it specifically. If the same content genuinely suits two, rewrite the title and the opening for the second rather than cross-posting the identical text, and leave a gap of several days. Moderators in overlapping communities see the same accounts, and a profile showing the same post five times reads as a campaign.

Size is not the thing to optimise for. A subreddit with 8,000 members where your exact buyer hangs out produces more than one with 800,000 where your post is one of four hundred that day. Smaller communities also tend to document their rules more clearly, which makes the first post safer.

Before your first post: the account matters more than the content

A new account posting about a product gets removed before anyone reads it. Reddit's filters and AutoModerator both weigh account age and karma, and a brand-new account with zero history matches the spam pattern exactly.

Spend two or three weeks commenting before you post anything. Answer questions in the subreddits you care about, with no product mentions at all, and let the karma accumulate as a side effect rather than a goal. Our guide to earning Reddit karma as a marketer covers how the system works and what the thresholds tend to be.

Pick a username a person would choose. An account named after the company reads as a corporate channel, and corporate channels get held to a stricter standard in most communities. If you're posting as yourself on behalf of a company, say so in the post. Disclosure costs you nothing and removes the main reason people get angry.

The rules that actually get posts removed in 2026

Reddit publishes eight site-wide rules in its content policy, and none of them sets a karma minimum or a promotion ratio. Rule 2 covers spam and manipulation, which is the one brands hit. Everything else that removes your post is set locally, by the subreddit, and it varies enough that assumptions carried from one community to the next will cost you posts.

The 9:1 or 1-in-10 rule everyone repeats comes from Reddit's self-promotion wiki, which describes it as a guideline for how much of your activity should be about things other than your own work. It is not policy, and no filter enforces it. Treating it as a quota you satisfy with nine throwaway comments misses the point, because moderators look at whether the account reads like a person with an interest in the topic.

Karma and account-age gates are set per subreddit, usually by AutoModerator, and they're often undocumented. You find out when a post vanishes without a notification. Some communities require a few hundred comment karma, some require an account older than 30 days, and some require both.

Shadowbanning is the one people get wrong. A genuine site-wide shadowban is rare and comes from Reddit itself. What brands usually hit is a subreddit-level removal or an AutoModerator filter, where the post looks fine on your profile and is invisible in the community. Check by opening the thread in a logged-out browser window. If the post isn't there, it was filtered.

Writing a title that doesn't read as an ad

The title decides whether anyone opens the post, and on Reddit it also decides whether a moderator reads it as promotion. Say what the post contains, in the words the community uses, and leave the adjectives out.

A title like "Our new feature makes reporting 10x faster" reads as an ad because it's written from the company's side. The same post titled "We rebuilt our reporting pipeline after it timed out at 2M rows, here's what we learned" reads as experience, and it will get opened by exactly the people who care. Both describe the same work.

Match the format the subreddit already uses. Some communities expect a tag in brackets, some ban questions in titles, some require flair before the post goes live. Read the last twenty posts before you write yours.

Comment before you post, and keep commenting after

Comments carry most of the value on Reddit and almost none of the risk. They need no flair, they rarely trip filters, and they put you in threads where somebody has already asked the question your product answers.

The pattern that works: answer the question properly, mention what you'd use and why, name the honest limitation, and say where you work if your product comes up. Compare that with the version that leads with the company name and links to a pricing page, which gets removed by morning. Same information, different order, completely different outcome.

SAASY LINKS tracked the sub-queries behind ChatGPT's answers on two prompts asking for the best Reddit marketing agencies for SaaS, and a site:reddit.com search appeared in 28 of the 90 sub-queries, 31% of them. The model goes looking for Reddit threads before writing its answer, and comments are what it finds. Comments are also what separates a thread that earns AI citations from one that gets read and forgotten. Which threads it reaches for is predictable enough to target deliberately.

What to do after you hit submit

Stay in the comments for the first hour. Early replies drive whether the post gains traction, and a post where the author answers questions keeps surfacing for days. One where the author posts and leaves is read as a drop, and it's usually treated accordingly.

Answer the hostile comments too. Reddit is blunt about products, and a defensive reply does more damage than the original criticism. Acknowledging a real limitation in public is the single fastest way to be read as credible there.

Timing affects early traction, and it varies by community rather than following a universal chart, which our data on the best time to post on Reddit breaks down by subreddit type. But a good post at a bad hour still beats a promotional post at a good one.

Then watch the post over months rather than days. Reddit threads keep ranking in Google and keep being retrieved by AI engines, so the number worth tracking is whether the post is still live and still being found at 90 days, not what it scored on day one.

A first-month posting plan

Week one, read. Subscribe to six or eight subreddits, read their rules pages and wikis, and note which ones document karma gates. Comment where you can answer something properly, with no product mentions at all. The goal is an account that looks like a person by the end of the week.

Week two, keep commenting and start watching for the recurring questions. Every community has four or five that come back monthly, and those are the posts worth writing later. Week three, write your first text post in the single community where you've been most useful, on a topic you can cover without naming your product once.

Week four, review what happened. Did the post survive, did anyone reply, did a moderator contact you. Then decide whether to write a second post or spend another fortnight in the comments. Most teams should pick the comments, because the ratio of value to risk there is much better and it keeps building the account.

Do not post the launch announcement in month one. It's the most common way an account burns itself before it has any standing, and there's no way to undo it in a community that saw it happen.

What gets brands removed

Posting promotional content without community context fails fastest. Reddit's spam detection is among the most aggressive on the web, and self-promotional posts get flagged, downvoted and removed within hours. Do it repeatedly and the account stops working everywhere, not just in that subreddit.

Cross-posting the same text to eight subreddits is the second one. It's visible from your profile, it reads as a campaign, and moderators in overlapping communities talk to each other. Write for one community or don't post.

Then there's vote manipulation, which is the one that ends the account rather than the post. Any agency promising guaranteed upvotes or front-page placement is running bot networks, and Reddit suspends those in waves. The accounts go, the posts go with them, and the brand keeps the association in communities that remember.

The quiet failure is different and more common. A brand posts something reasonable, gets no traction, decides Reddit doesn't work, and leaves. What actually happened is that the account had no history, so a filter held the post for review and nobody ever saw it.

“People are going to Google with the intention of ending up on Reddit. What's happening is people know that Reddit has answers, advice, perspectives on just about whatever you're looking for.”

Steve Huffman

CEO, Reddit

Source →

That's the reason to get this right rather than fast. People arrive at these threads through search, months later, looking for an honest answer. If you'd rather hand the work to a team with aged accounts already active in your subreddits, we compare the options in our roundup of the best Reddit marketing agencies, and our own Reddit marketing service runs it as human-written posting and commenting.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I post on Reddit as a brand without getting banned?

Build comment history in the subreddit first, post something useful rather than promotional, and disclose who you work for. Most removals come from new accounts posting about their own product, which matches the spam pattern filters look for.

How much karma do I need to post on Reddit?

There's no site-wide minimum. Individual subreddits set karma and account-age gates through AutoModerator, often without documenting them, so the threshold that matters is the one in the community you're posting to.

Is the 9:1 self-promotion rule official?

No. It comes from Reddit's self-promotion wiki as a guideline, not from the content policy, and nothing enforces it automatically. It's still a reasonable discipline, but moderators judge accounts on whether they look genuine rather than on ratios.

Can I post links to my blog or product?

Sometimes, and it depends entirely on the subreddit. Many restrict link posts from accounts without history, and some ban them outright. A text post that contains the useful part, with the link only if someone asks, survives far more often.

Why did my Reddit post disappear?

Usually AutoModerator filtered it or a moderator removed it. Open the thread in a logged-out window: if the post is missing there but visible on your profile, it was filtered. Message the moderators once and ask which rule it hit.

Do I need to know how to post on Reddit differently on mobile?

The steps are the same and the app exposes the same post types and flair selector. The one difference worth knowing is that Markdown formatting is easier to get wrong on mobile, so draft longer posts elsewhere and paste them in.

How often should a brand post on Reddit?

Post when you have something worth reading, which for most SaaS teams is once or twice a month at most. Comment far more often than you post, because comments carry most of the value and almost none of the risk.

What is a shadowban on Reddit?

A site-wide shadowban makes your content invisible to everyone while looking normal to you, and it's applied by Reddit, not by moderators. It's rarer than people think. Most disappearances are subreddit-level filtering instead.
