Reddit ChatGPT Citations: Which Threads Get Cited (2026)

TL;DR
Across 90 days of tracking, ChatGPT cited Reddit 4,268 times in 564 answers about SEO, link building and marketing agencies, making reddit.com 6.3% of its citation share in that set. The cited threads are not what most teams expect. Of the 42 most-cited community threads, 29 were vendor-selection threads where somebody asks which agency or tool to pick, and 18 of those were ranked lists posted as Reddit threads. A further quarter of the citations in the top 60 went to Reddit's own business pages rather than community discussions at all. Concentration is high: 19 of the 42 threads came from just three subreddits out of 24, led by r/DigitalMarketing. The practical read is to stop chasing viral posts and branded subreddits, and to get named inside the ranked-list and recommendation threads that already exist in a handful of communities. Use the Cited Thread Profile to pick which ones are worth an hour.

The exact 90-day playbook we run for clients
ChatGPT's Reddit citations concentrate on vendor-selection threads. In 90 days of tracking, 29 of the 42 most-cited community threads asked which agency or tool to pick, and 18 of those were ranked lists. A quarter of the citations in the top 60 went to Reddit's own business pages, not community discussions.
SAASY LINKS tracked 6,132 AI answers across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews between 7 July and 5 October 2026, covering prompts about SEO, link building, AI visibility and marketing agencies. Those answers cited 1,123 distinct reddit.com URLs. ChatGPT alone accounted for 4,268 Reddit citations across 564 answers, which put reddit.com at 6.3% of its citation share in that set.
One caveat before the numbers. This is one category, ours, and the pattern in fintech or healthcare may differ. If you want the broader question of whether Reddit presence moves AI visibility at all, our analysis of reddit seo and AI search answers it with controlled-test data. This post is narrower: which threads actually get quoted.
How We Tracked This
The dataset is a fixed panel of buyer prompts, run repeatedly across engines and logged answer by answer. Every citation in an answer gets recorded with its full URL, so a thread cited in 90 separate answers counts 90 times rather than once. The window runs 7 July to 5 October 2026.
What the tracked set covers
| Figure | |
|---|---|
| Tracked AI answers, all engines | 6,132 |
| ChatGPT answers citing Reddit | 564 |
| ChatGPT citations of reddit.com | 4,268 |
| reddit.com share of ChatGPT citations | 6.3% |
| Distinct reddit.com URLs cited | 1,123 |
| Window | 7 Jul to 5 Oct 2026 |
The thread-level analysis below uses the 60 most-cited reddit.com URLs rather than all 1,123, because the tail is thin: most URLs appear in a handful of answers and tell you little. Our Reddit marketing strategy guide covers the posting side of this, and the method here follows the same prompt-panel approach we use for client reporting.
Two limits worth stating. Prompts in this panel sit in one category, so the subreddit names below are ours rather than universal. And citation counts move, which is why the thread-level figures carry a date.
Which Reddit Threads ChatGPT Cites in 2026
The cited set is dominated by threads where somebody is choosing a vendor. Across the 60 most-cited reddit.com URLs, 42 were community threads and 29 of those asked which provider to use. Ranked lists made up 18 on their own. Discussion threads about tactics, news or opinion barely register by comparison.
The 10 most-cited Reddit URLs in our tracked set, 7 July to 5 October 2026
| Thread | Subreddit | Answers citing it | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best SaaS link building agencies in 2026? | r/DigitalMarketing | 90 | Ranked list |
| Best Link Building Services in 2026, Tested List | r/agencynewbies | 89 | Ranked list |
| The 7 Leading AI SEO Agencies for Modern Search | r/b2bmarketing | 88 | Ranked list |
| Top 15 Reddit Marketing Agencies in 2026 | r/HonestBuyerReviews | 86 | Ranked list |
| What's the best marketing agency you've worked with | r/SaaS | 81 | Recommendation request |
| Every SEO agency now lists AI search optimization | r/DigitalMarketing | 62 | Opinion post |
| Are Reddit marketing services actually worth it | r/DigitalMarketing | 56 | Recommendation request |
| Looking for a reddit marketing agency | r/digital_marketing | 53 | Recommendation request |
| Reddit agency partners overview | business.reddit.com | 52 | Reddit's own page |
| 10 Best Reddit Marketing Agencies | r/u_thescrollman | 50 | Ranked list |
Nine of those ten are buying questions. The single most-cited thread appeared in 90 of 6,132 tracked answers, which is 1.47% of everything we logged, from one Reddit URL. Which is why posting time barely moves citations, even though it moves upvotes a lot.
The 43% ranked-list share lines up with what Tim Soulo found at Ahrefs across 26,283 URLs and 750 queries, where "best X" listicles made up 43.8% of all AI chatbot citations. The format that wins on the open web wins inside Reddit too, which is less of a coincidence than it looks: both are lists of named vendors with reasons attached.
The Cited Thread Profile
The Cited Thread Profile is four tests we run before spending an hour on a Reddit thread. Does it ask which vendor to pick, does it name several of them, is it in a subreddit the engines keep returning to, and does the title carry the year? Four passes means it's worth a real comment.

The four tests, and what the data says about each
| Test | What it means | Evidence from the tracked set |
|---|---|---|
| Is it a buying question? | Somebody is choosing between providers, not learning a tactic | 29 of 42 cited community threads |
| Does it name several vendors? | A list beats a single recommendation | 18 of 42 are ranked lists |
| Is the subreddit one engines return to? | Citations concentrate in a handful of communities | 19 of 42 came from 3 of 24 subreddits |
| Does the title carry the year? | Dated titles dominate the cited set | Most top-10 titles include 2026 |
Run the tests in that order, because the first one eliminates most candidates in a second. A thread asking how to fix a canonical tag is not going to be quoted in an answer about which agency to hire, no matter how good your comment is.
A Quarter of the Citations Skip Community Threads Entirely
Reddit's own business pages took 18 of the 60 most-cited URLs and 25% of the citations within that group. These are marketing pages on business.reddit.com covering agency partners, ad case studies and moderator guidance, not discussions anyone can join. No amount of community work puts you in them.
What the 60 most-cited Reddit URLs actually are
| Type of URL | Count | Share of the 60 |
|---|---|---|
| Community threads | 42 | 70% |
| Reddit's own business pages | 18 | 30% |
| Ranked lists inside community threads | 18 | 30% |
| Recommendation requests inside community threads | 11 | 18% |
Worth knowing before you set a target. If a quarter of the Reddit citation surface in your category is Reddit's own corporate content, then the realistic ceiling for community work is lower than a raw domain-level citation share suggests.
Three Subreddits Carry Nearly Half of It
Citations cluster hard. The 42 cited community threads came from 24 distinct subreddits, but 19 of them sat in just three: r/DigitalMarketing with 9, then r/SaaS and r/digital_marketing with 5 apiece. The long tail of 21 other subreddits contributed one or two threads each.
Where the cited community threads live
| Subreddit | Cited threads | Share of the 42 |
|---|---|---|
| r/DigitalMarketing | 9 | 21% |
| r/SaaS | 5 | 12% |
| r/digital_marketing | 5 | 12% |
| r/b2bmarketing | 2 | 5% |
| r/Superframeworks | 2 | 5% |
| 18 other subreddits | 1 each | 43% combined |
Two of those three are near-duplicates of each other, which tells you something about how little the engines care about community size or prestige. They go where the buying questions are asked, and the same question gets asked in both spellings of the same subreddit.
Note what's missing. Not one branded subreddit appears in the cited set, which matches what Profound found across roughly 700,000 social citations: 99% of ChatGPT's Reddit citations point to individual threads rather than subreddits or profiles.
Finding the three subreddits in your category
Don't borrow our list. Run ten of your own buyer prompts in ChatGPT, collect every reddit.com URL that appears, and count the subreddits. A pattern shows up inside an hour, and it usually names communities you'd have ranked lower than the ones you're already posting in.
Expect the same shape rather than the same names: heavy concentration in two or three communities where buying questions get asked, a long tail of single appearances, and at least one subreddit nobody on your team had heard of. In our set that was r/HonestBuyerReviews, which carried a thread cited in 86 answers.
How to Get Named Inside a Cited Thread
Work the threads that already get cited rather than creating new ones. A thread with 90 answer-level citations behind it is a known quantity, and adding a useful comment to it costs an hour. Starting a comparable thread from scratch costs months and usually fails.
“When you come across a review or comparison article that covers your category but doesn't include you, paste the URL into Site Explorer and check the AI Citations data. If ChatGPT is already citing that page, getting added to it becomes a high-priority opportunity.”
That logic transfers straight to Reddit threads, and the threads are easier to get into than the articles, because anybody can comment.
The sequence that works
Search your category plus reddit on Google and note which threads rank. Run four or five of your buyer prompts in ChatGPT and record every reddit.com URL that comes back. The overlap between those two lists is your target set, and it's usually shorter than ten threads.
Then read each one properly before writing anything. Look at which vendors are already named, whether the consensus is current, and whether the thread has a moderator who removes vendor comments. SAASY LINKS found the most-cited thread in our set had been live for months before it started appearing in answers, so age works in your favour here rather than against it.
Target set triage
| What you find | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Thread ranks and gets cited, you're absent | The highest-value gap | Comment with specifics within the week |
| Thread gets cited, you're named badly | Stale or wrong information | Reply with a dated correction, nothing else |
| Thread ranks but isn't cited | Possible future citation | Comment, then re-check in a month |
| Thread is cited but vendor comments get removed | Not workable | Skip it and tell the team why |
What a comment in a cited thread needs
Name the brand in plain text, give a number, and say where the product is the wrong fit. Semrush's study of 248,000 Reddit URLs found 80% of cited posts have fewer than 20 upvotes and Q&A threads make up over half of Reddit citations, so you're writing for the retrieval system rather than the front page. A useful answer that nobody upvotes still gets quoted.
The OppAlerts study of roughly 167,000 domains across 13 models put Reddit posts at +0.128 correlation with AI visibility, one of 18 signals it measured. Correlation at that level rewards presence across many threads rather than one perfect comment.
Where a ranked-list thread already names competitors and not you, that's a placement problem rather than a commenting problem. Our comparison of the best reddit marketing agency options covers who does this work, and our Reddit marketing service runs it as a cadence.
Why This Looks Like a Listicle Problem in 2026
The cited Reddit set behaves like the cited web. Ranked lists dominate both, the lists name multiple vendors, and being absent from one costs you the answer rather than just the click. Reddit simply hosts a version of the same format that anybody can post and anybody can comment on.
That changes where placement effort goes. A ranked-list thread in r/DigitalMarketing and a "best X" article on a trade site are the same asset from an engine's point of view, and the Reddit one is usually easier to get named in. Our listicle placements work treats both as the same pipeline, and the same logic sits behind ai search visibility tracking.
SAASY LINKS logged 18 ranked-list threads inside the 42 most-cited community threads, which is 43%, within a point of the 43.8% listicle share Ahrefs measured across the open web. Two independent samples landing that close suggests the format preference is the model's, not the platform's.
What Doesn't Get Cited in 2026
Branded subreddits produced nothing in our tracked set. Zero of the 42 cited community threads lived in a company-run community, which makes a branded subreddit one of the slowest routes to a citation despite being the most commonly recommended one.
Self-ranking lists are the other trap. Putting yourself at number one with four competitors as filler reads as bias to both readers and models. SAASY LINKS' citation research on GEO listicles found self-promotional lists earn 19.1% of AI citations against 80.9% for genuinely third-party ones, and two of the cited threads in our Reddit set explicitly call out vendor-written rankings. The communities are watching for it.
Buying upvotes is worse than useless here, since 80% of cited posts have under 20 upvotes anyway. You'd be manipulating the one metric the retrieval system appears to ignore, while breaking Reddit's content policy on manipulation and risking the account that carries your comment history.
And a thread that gets cited today may not tomorrow. Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations has swung repeatedly, so track which specific URLs name you rather than assuming a placement holds. Our breakdown of the most cited websites in ChatGPT covers the wider volatility.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which Reddit threads does ChatGPT cite most?
Vendor-selection threads. In our 90-day tracked set, 29 of the 42 most-cited community threads asked which agency or tool to pick, and 18 of those were ranked lists with multiple named vendors.
How many Reddit citations does ChatGPT make?
In our set, ChatGPT cited Reddit 4,268 times across 564 answers over 90 days, making reddit.com 6.3% of its citation share. That covers prompts about SEO, link building and marketing agencies, so other categories will differ.
Does a branded subreddit help with ChatGPT citations?
Not in our data. Zero of the 42 cited community threads were in a company-run subreddit, which matches Profound's finding that 99% of ChatGPT's Reddit citations point at individual threads rather than subreddits or profiles.
Which subreddits get cited most by ChatGPT?
For B2B marketing queries, r/DigitalMarketing led with 9 of 42 cited threads, followed by r/SaaS and r/digital_marketing with 5 each. Three subreddits out of 24 accounted for 45% of the cited threads.
Do upvotes affect whether ChatGPT cites a Reddit thread?
Barely. Semrush found 80% of Reddit posts cited by AI search have fewer than 20 upvotes, so discussion depth matters far more than score. Buying upvotes also breaches Reddit's content policy.
Should I start a new thread or comment on an existing one?
Comment on one that already gets cited. A thread with established citations is a known quantity and costs an hour to join, while building a comparable thread from scratch takes months and usually fails.
Why does ChatGPT cite Reddit's own business pages?
Because they answer commercial questions directly and sit on a high-authority domain. In our set, 18 of the 60 most-cited reddit.com URLs were business.reddit.com marketing pages rather than community threads.
How often should I check which Reddit threads cite my brand?
Monthly, using a fixed set of buyer prompts run several times per engine. Reddit's citation share moves without warning, so a single check tells you about one day rather than a trend.
