SaaS SEO Checklist: 48 Tasks in 4 Stages (2026)

TL;DR
This SaaS SEO checklist has 48 tasks split into four stages, and each stage ends with a gate you pass before starting the next. Foundations (weeks 1 to 2) covers tracking, indexing, keeping app and login pages out of Google, and letting AI crawlers in. Revenue pages (months 1 to 2) covers pricing, comparison, alternatives, integration and use-case pages, each with one target query. Authority (months 3 to 6) covers links to the pages that convert, getting into "best X" lists, reviews and proof assets. Compounding (every quarter) covers refreshes, AI citation tracking and pipeline reporting. Start with the ten highest-impact tasks, and skip llms.txt, routine disavows and chasing a perfect PageSpeed score.

The exact 90-day playbook we run for clients
A SaaS SEO checklist is the list of tasks that gets a software company found in Google and AI answers, in the order they pay off. This one has 48 tasks in four stages: foundations, revenue pages, authority and quarterly upkeep. Each stage ends with a gate you pass before moving on.
Order matters more than completeness. Most checklists hand you 40 items with equal weight, so teams start with whatever looks easy, like meta descriptions, and leave the pricing page untouched for a year. The stages below put the tasks that move demos first.
Each task comes with a "done when" test, so there's no arguing about whether it's finished. For the thinking behind the order, like which pages to build and why, read our SaaS SEO strategy guide first.
What Goes on a SaaS SEO Checklist in 2026?
A SaaS SEO checklist covers four kinds of work: technical setup, the pages buyers read before they sign up, the links and mentions that make those pages rank, and the upkeep that keeps them ranking. A general SEO checklist covers the same ground but misses SaaS problems like app pages leaking into Google.
SaaS SEO checklist vs a general SEO checklist vs an SEO audit
| General SEO checklist | SaaS SEO checklist | SEO audit | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Cover the basics on any site | Build and grow search pipeline in order | Find what's broken right now |
| Pages it focuses on | Blog posts and home page | Pricing, vs, alternatives, integration and use-case pages | Whatever the crawl flags |
| SaaS-specific checks | None | App and login pages, JS rendering, docs, AI referrals | Depends on the auditor |
| How often | Once | Stages 1 to 3 once, stage 4 every quarter | Once or twice a year |
AI search adds a layer that older checklists skip. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews pull answers from pages they can crawl and from sites that mention you, so a few of the tasks below exist only to get cited there.
The SEO Stage Gates: How to Use This Checklist
The SEO Stage Gates split the 48 tasks into four stages, and each stage ends with a pass condition. Don't start stage 2 until key pages are indexed and signups are tracked. Don't chase links until revenue pages exist. The gates stop teams from spending months on work that can't pay off yet.

The SEO Stage Gates at a glance
| Stage | Timing | Tasks | Gate to pass before moving on |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Foundations | Weeks 1 to 2 | 12 | Key pages indexed, signups tracked by source |
| 2. Revenue pages | Months 1 to 2 | 14 | Pricing, vs and integration pages live and indexed |
| 3. Authority | Months 3 to 6 | 12 | Revenue pages reach page two, links growing every month |
| 4. Compounding | Every quarter | 10 | Repeats: refresh, report, extend |
Stage 4 loops back. Every quarter you refresh the revenue pages, add pages for new competitors and features, and check where AI answers cite you. That loop is where most of the long-term traffic comes from.
Stage 1: Foundations Checklist (Weeks 1 to 2)
Foundations make sure Google and AI crawlers can reach your marketing pages, that app pages stay out of the index, and that every signup is tracked back to the page it came from. These 12 tasks take one to two weeks for most SaaS sites. Skip them and every later report is guesswork.
Stage 1: Foundations (12 tasks)
| # | Task | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Verify the domain in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools | Both show data for the main domain |
| 2 | Set up GA4 with signups and demo requests as key events | Every signup is recorded with its landing page |
| 3 | Track AI referrals (chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com) as their own channel | AI-referred sessions show separately in reports |
| 4 | Add "How did you hear about us?" to the demo form | Answers reach the CRM next to each lead |
| 5 | Submit an XML sitemap of marketing pages only | No app, login or staging URLs in the sitemap |
| 6 | Noindex app, login, staging and preview URLs | None appear in a site: search |
| 7 | Put the blog and docs in subfolders, or link subdomains from the main navigation | Blog and docs sit under the main domain or are linked from it |
| 8 | Check that marketing pages render without relying on client-side JavaScript | Main content shows in URL Inspection's rendered HTML |
| 9 | Allow search and AI crawlers in robots.txt | Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and CCBot aren't blocked |
| 10 | Set one canonical URL per page | UTM and A/B test variants point to the clean URL |
| 11 | Fix redirect chains and 404s on URLs that have links | No chains longer than one hop in a crawl |
| 12 | Add Organization schema and keep the company name identical everywhere | Same name, logo and description on the site, G2, LinkedIn and Crunchbase |
How to Track AI Referrals in GA4
Task 3 takes about ten minutes. In GA4, create a custom channel group with a rule that matches the session source against chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com and claude.ai, and place it above the default Referral channel. Without it, AI visits sit inside Referral or Direct, and nobody notices when they start converting.
Pair it with task 4. AI answers often send buyers who come back later by typing your URL, so the demo form's "How did you hear about us?" answers catch what analytics files as direct traffic.
The SaaS-Specific Checks
Tasks 6 to 8 catch problems general checklists miss. SaaS sites often leak thousands of app, login and staging URLs into Google, which wastes crawl time and sometimes outranks the real pages. Single-page app frameworks can also hide marketing copy from crawlers that don't run JavaScript.
Google's JavaScript SEO documentation explains how its renderer handles client-side pages, but most AI crawlers don't run JavaScript at all. Server-render the marketing site and you avoid the question.
Task 9 matters for AI answers. The OppAlerts study of about 167,000 domains found that presence in Common Crawl, one of the datasets LLMs learn from, correlates at +0.165 with AI visibility. Blocking CCBot takes you out of it.

Stage 2: Revenue Pages Checklist (Months 1 to 2)
Revenue pages are the ones buyers read right before they book a demo: pricing, comparison, alternatives, integration and use-case pages. This stage builds them and gives each one a single target query. Most SaaS sites have a blog full of posts before these exist, which is backwards.
Stage 2: Revenue pages (14 tasks)
| # | Task | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| 13 | Sort the keyword list by buying stage | Every term is tagged ready-to-buy, comparing, solving or learning |
| 14 | Map one primary keyword to each page | No two pages target the same query |
| 15 | Publish a pricing page with a visible starting price | A price shows without filling in a form |
| 16 | Build a "[you] vs [competitor]" page for each main competitor | Pages exist for the competitors that show up in most deals |
| 17 | Build "[competitor] alternatives" pages | A page exists for each competitor you win deals from |
| 18 | Give each major integration its own page | Each page covers what syncs, setup steps and a screenshot |
| 19 | Build use-case pages by role or industry | Each one links to pricing and has a demo CTA |
| 20 | Write title tags of 50 to 60 characters with the keyword first | No revenue-page title runs past 60 characters |
| 21 | Use one H1 that matches the target query | H1 and title tag say the same thing |
| 22 | Answer the page's main question in the first 100 words | A buyer finds the answer without scrolling |
| 23 | Add a comparison table to every vs and alternatives page | The table covers price, main features and who each tool suits |
| 24 | Add an FAQ with FAQPage schema to pricing and comparison pages | The page passes Google's Rich Results Test |
| 25 | Link to each revenue page from every related post | Each revenue page has 5 or more internal links pointing to it |
| 26 | Put a demo or trial CTA on the first screen | CTA is visible without scrolling, on mobile too |
What a Vs Page Needs to Rank
Tasks 4 and 11 decide whether a comparison page ranks or reads like an ad. Put the comparison table near the top, list the competitor's real strengths, and include pricing for both sides where it's public. Close with a short section on who should pick the competitor instead, since that's the paragraph buyers quote to their team.
Keep the page current. A vs page that still lists last year's pricing loses trust fast, which is why stage 4 repeats the update every quarter.
Why These Pages Come Before the Blog
Revenue pages rank for queries with buying intent, so a handful of visits can turn into a demo. Blog posts on "what is" topics need thousands of visits to do the same. And Google has been moving in the same direction.
“In short, Google has moved beyond simply ranking “good content” to proactively rewarding what AI can’t replicate.”
A pricing page or an honest comparison is exactly that kind of page. An AI tool can summarise a "what is" topic, but it can't publish your prices or show your setup screen.
Our SaaS on-page SEO guide covers titles, headings and schema for each page type. To find the queries for this stage, start with bottom of funnel keywords.
Stage 3: Authority Checklist (Months 3 to 6)
Authority work gets other sites to link to and mention your revenue pages, so they can climb from page two to page one. It covers links, reviews, "best X" lists and one piece of original data worth citing. Start it once revenue pages are live, because links to missing pages build nothing you can sell from.
Stage 3: Authority (12 tasks)
| # | Task | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| 27 | Pick 5 to 10 target pages for links | The list is revenue pages and proof assets, not only the home page |
| 28 | Write an anchor text plan | Most anchors are branded or natural phrases, with few exact-match anchors |
| 29 | Vet every link prospect before outreach | Real organic traffic, a related topic and few outbound links per page |
| 30 | Build links at a steady monthly pace | Links arrive every month, with no one-month spikes |
| 31 | Get into "best X" lists for your category | You appear in lists ranking for your main category query |
| 32 | Ask happy customers for G2 and Capterra reviews | New reviews land every month |
| 33 | Publish one proof asset built on your own data | The page is live and pitched to 20 or more writers |
| 34 | Turn unlinked brand mentions into links | Mentions are checked monthly and owners contacted |
| 35 | 301 redirect dead URLs that still have links | Every URL with referring domains resolves |
| 36 | Get listed in integration partners' marketplaces | A listing exists in each partner's app directory |
| 37 | Report referring domains per target page | The report counts domains, not total backlinks |
| 38 | Answer buyer questions on Reddit from a named account | Answers posted in the 2 or 4 subreddits your buyers use |
Vet Links Before You Chase Them
Task 3 saves the most money. SAASY LINKS reviewed 300 unsolicited "guest post available" emails received in 2026 and found 64% of the offered sites already linked out to casino, CBD, payday loan or essay-writing sites. A link from that neighbourhood can't help a SaaS brand.
Task 11 matters for the same reason. One sitewide footer link can create 1,000 backlinks and still be a single referring domain, so backlink totals flatter a thin profile. Count domains, and check which page each one points to.
Get Into the Lists Buyers and AI Tools Read
Lists and review sites feed AI answers directly. An SE Ranking study of 30,000 commercial keywords found 34.5% of AI Overviews cite at least one review platform, and G2 took 23.1% of those citations.
Listicle placements move rankings too. SAASY LINKS ran a listicle placement campaign for a CRM startup at DR 34: nine placements in 60 days, and the client's main keyword moved from position 47 to position 11 within 90 days.
Our off-page SEO checklist has the full list of authority tasks. If you'd rather hand them off, our SaaS link building agency runs this stage for software companies.
Stage 4: Compounding Checklist (Every Quarter)
Compounding tasks keep ranked pages ranking and find the next pages worth building. Run these 10 every quarter: refresh what's slipping, cut what never worked, track AI citations and report pipeline to sales. This stage never ends, and for a mature SaaS site it's most of the SEO work.
Stage 4: Compounding (10 tasks, every quarter)
| # | Task | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| 39 | Refresh the top pages losing clicks | Pages with falling clicks in Search Console are rewritten |
| 40 | Update years, prices and stats on key pages | No outdated figures on revenue pages |
| 41 | Merge or redirect posts with no clicks in 12 months | Each thin post is merged, redirected or improved |
| 42 | Track AI citations on 20 to 50 buyer prompts | A monthly citation count per AI engine exists |
| 43 | Note which of your pages AI answers cite | Cited URLs are listed, with gaps marked for work |
| 44 | Re-crawl the site for new errors | No new 404s, redirect chains or stray noindex tags |
| 45 | Check rankings for revenue-page queries | Movement is recorded against last quarter |
| 46 | Report SEO and AI-sourced demos and pipeline | The quarterly number is shared with sales |
| 47 | Update vs and alternatives pages for new competitors and features | Pages match the current product and pricing |
| 48 | Run a quarterly SEO audit | Findings are logged and assigned |
Fewer, better pages win this stage. Publishing 20 mediocre posts a month is worse than publishing four excellent ones, because AI tools don't cite volume. They cite the single best answer to a question.
How to Track AI Citations Without a Tool
Task 4 doesn't need software to start. Write 20 to 50 prompts your buyers would ask, like "best [category] for [team size]" or "[competitor] alternatives", and run each one in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google once a month. Log whether you're named and which of your pages gets cited.
Answers change from run to run, so track the trend across months rather than any single answer. Once the list passes 50 prompts, a tracking tool starts saving real time, and the SaaS SEO checklist stays the same either way.
For task 10, our SEO audit checklist walks through each step and what to fix first.
Which 10 Tasks Should You Do First?
If you only have a month, do the ten tasks below. They're ranked by likely impact on demos against the effort they take, based on our experience with SaaS sites. Most teams can finish all ten in four to six weeks with one SEO lead and a writer.
The first 10 tasks from the SaaS SEO checklist
| Priority | Task | Stage | Impact | Effort |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Noindex app, login and staging URLs | 1 | High | Low |
| 2 | Track signups and demos by landing page | 1 | High | Low |
| 3 | Publish a pricing page with a visible starting price | 2 | High | Low |
| 4 | Build vs pages for your top competitors | 2 | High | Medium |
| 5 | Build alternatives pages for competitors you win against | 2 | High | Medium |
| 6 | Link every related post to its revenue page | 2 | Medium | Low |
| 7 | Allow AI crawlers in robots.txt | 1 | Medium | Low |
| 8 | Ask customers for G2 and Capterra reviews | 3 | Medium | Low |
| 9 | Get into "best X" lists for your category | 3 | High | Medium |
| 10 | Track AI citations on your top buyer prompts | 4 | Medium | Low |

SEO Checklist Items to Skip in 2026
Some items still sit on most SEO checklists but don't earn their time in 2026. Four are worth cutting outright: writing an llms.txt file, disavowing links as routine upkeep, chasing a perfect PageSpeed score and tuning keyword density. Spend those hours on stage 2 instead.
Take llms.txt first. Cyrus Shepard's May 2026 meta-analysis of 54 studies scored it 2.0 out of 10, the lowest of 23 AI citation factors, while URL accessibility scored 9.5 and search rank 9.4.
Disavowing is next. Google's John Mueller said in April 2025 that "the disavow tool is not something that you need to do on a regular basis. It's not a part of normal site maintenance." Save it for a manual action.
A PageSpeed score of 100 won't win a ranking on its own. Pass Core Web Vitals and move on. Keyword density is older still: use the target phrase in the title, H1 and first paragraph, then write for the reader.
If you'd rather have someone run the whole checklist, our SaaS SEO agency works through it stage by stage.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a SaaS SEO checklist?
A SaaS SEO checklist is an ordered list of tasks for getting a software company found in search and AI answers. It covers technical setup, revenue pages, links and quarterly upkeep, plus SaaS-only checks like keeping app pages out of Google.
What should be on an SEO checklist?
An SEO checklist should cover crawling and indexing, tracking, the pages that convert, on-page basics, links and regular refreshes. For SaaS, add pricing, comparison and integration pages, and track AI citations.
How is a SaaS SEO checklist different from an SEO audit?
A checklist tells you what to build and in what order. An audit checks what's broken on the site today, so it fits inside stage 4 as a quarterly task.
How long does it take to complete a SaaS SEO checklist?
Stages 1 and 2 take about two months for most SaaS teams. Stage 3 runs from month three to month six, and stage 4 repeats every quarter after that.
Which SEO tasks matter most for SaaS?
Keeping app pages out of Google and building pricing, vs, alternatives and integration pages. Those pages convert fastest once they rank.
Do SaaS companies need an llms.txt file?
Not yet. Cyrus Shepard's 2026 meta-analysis ranked llms.txt last of 23 AI citation factors, so crawl access and search rankings matter far more.
How often should you review your SEO checklist?
Every quarter. Stage 4 is built for that review: refresh pages, re-crawl the site, check AI citations and report pipeline.
