SEO and Link Building: How They Work Together in 2026

TL;DR
SEO and link building work together because links are how Google, and now AI search tools, decide which of several good pages to trust. Google's How Search Works page still names links from prominent websites as a quality signal, and an Ahrefs study found only about 1 in 6,671 pages with no referring domains gets more than 1,000 monthly search visits. Links aren't always the fix, though. Run the SEO Bottleneck Test on any page stuck outside the top five: check it's indexed, check it matches intent as well as the top three, check your strongest pages link to it, and only then compare its referring domains with the top three. If it has fewer than half, links are the bottleneck. In 2026 the same links also feed AI visibility: Semrush found authority correlated with AI mentions at 0.65 across 1,000 domains, with nofollow links counting about as much as followed ones.

The exact 90-day playbook we run for clients
SEO and link building work together because links are how Google, and now AI search tools, decide which of several good pages to trust. Google's own guide says it checks "if other prominent websites link or refer to the content." Content and technical work make a page eligible to rank. Links decide whether it wins.
The traffic data backs that up. Tim Soulo's Ahrefs study found 96.55% of pages get zero traffic from Google. Of roughly 20 million indexed pages with no referring domains, only about 2,997 got more than 1,000 monthly search visits. That's 1 in 6,671.
Links aren't always the fix, though. Plenty of SaaS pages stuck on page two need a rewrite or a redirect cleanup before a new backlink would do anything. When links are the answer, our link building guide has the tactics.
What Is Link Building in SEO?
Link building in SEO is the work of getting other websites to link to your pages, so search engines treat those pages as more trustworthy. Each link acts like a citation. Google looks at who links to you and how relevant they are, then uses that to separate pages that otherwise look alike.
The idea goes back to PageRank, which Larry Page and Sergey Brin described in their 1998 Stanford paper as a way to score pages by the links pointing at them. Google's ranking has changed a lot since. But its How Search Works page still names links from prominent sites as one way it judges quality.
A backlink is the link itself. Link building is the process of earning it. If the terms are new to you, our explainer on backlinks in SEO covers link types and attributes.
How Does Link Building Help SEO in 2026?
Link building helps SEO by telling Google which of several similar pages to trust, and by helping crawlers find new pages. In 2026 the same authority signals also shape which brands AI search tools mention. So one good link now works in Google and in ChatGPT at the same time.
What links do for SEO in 2026
| Job | How it works | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Ranking | Links from relevant sites act as votes of trust between similar pages | Google How Search Works: links from prominent sites signal quality |
| Discovery | Googlebot finds new URLs by following links from pages it already knows | Google Search Central crawling docs |
| Traffic | Pages with no referring domains rarely earn search traffic | Ahrefs: 1 in 6,671 link-less pages tops 1,000 visits/month |
| AI visibility | Authority correlates with how often AI tools mention a brand | Semrush: 0.65 correlation across 1,000 domains |
Discovery is the quiet benefit. Google's crawling docs explain that Googlebot finds most new URLs by following links from pages it has already seen. And the AI side is newer. Margarita Loktionova's Semrush study, run with Kevin Indig, looked at 1,000 domains across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews and found Authority Score correlated with AI mentions at 0.65.
Famous links don't automatically count for more. The OppAlerts study of about 167,000 domains ranked Wikipedia citations last of 18 AI visibility signals, at +0.055. We'd rather have a link from a niche site your buyers read than a Wikipedia footnote nobody clicks.
The SEO Bottleneck Test: Does Your Page Need Links?
The SEO Bottleneck Test is a four-question check we run on any page stuck outside the top five before spending a dollar on links. It finds the one thing holding that page back. Links sit last on purpose: they're the most expensive fix, and the one teams buy too early most often.

The SEO Bottleneck Test: four checks, in order
| Check | Question | If the answer is no | Where to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Technical | Is the page indexed and crawlable? | Fix robots.txt, canonicals and redirects first | Search Console URL Inspection |
| 2. Content | Does it match intent as well as the top 3? | Rewrite around the format that ranks | A manual look at the SERP |
| 3. Internal links | Do your strongest pages link to it? | Add contextual internal links | Search Console Links report, Ahrefs Site Audit |
| 4. External links | Does it have fewer than half the top 3's referring domains? | Links aren't the gap; look at SERP features and brand demand | Ahrefs or Semrush backlink reports |
Sometimes the links already exist and are leaking. A project management SaaS had 41 referring domains pointing at feature pages deleted in a redesign. SAASY LINKS 301-redirected those URLs to their live equivalents, and the main features page moved from position 19 to position 7 in five weeks without a single new link. Recovered link equity did the work.
The "half the referring domains" line is our rule of thumb, not a Google number. It stops teams from pouring links into pages that can't win. Twenty links to a "what is SEO" post won't beat Moz, Ahrefs and HubSpot, and our guide on how many backlinks to rank shows how to size the real gap.
How Much Do Links Matter Compared to Content?
Links matter less on their own than they did in 2012, but they still settle close races. Content and intent match get a page into contention. When several pages answer a query equally well, stronger and more relevant links usually break the tie. That's the working balance between SEO and link building in 2026.
Google hasn't made this easy to read. At SERP Conf in April 2024, Gary Illyes said, "We need very few links to rank pages... Over the years we've made links less important." The same day, he posted that he "shouldn't have said that."
Both can be true. The Ahrefs study found that pages with no referring domains sometimes rank on low-competition topics, mostly when the site as a whole already has authority. A page on a strong site borrows strength. A page on a new site mostly can't.
Our read, and it's an opinion: on a SaaS site under DR 30, links are usually the bottleneck for commercial pages. On a DR 60 site, it's more often content or internal links. Where links fit in a full SaaS SEO plan depends on which of those you are.
What Makes a Link Worth Building in 2026
A link is worth building in 2026 when it comes from a site your buyers actually read and sits inside content about your topic. Domain Rating helps you shortlist sites. Relevance and real traffic decide whether the link moves anything in Google or in AI answers, and they're harder to fake than a DR score.
Relevance and Real Readers Beat DR
We'd take an unlinked mention on a DR 30+ site your market reads over a linked mention on a site nobody visits. The mention is the signal, and the link is a bonus. It's also why editorial links from real publications keep their value long after bought placements fade.
Nofollow isn't the dead end it used to be, either. Google has treated nofollow as a hint rather than a strict rule since 2019, and in the Semrush study nofollow links (0.340) correlated with AI visibility about as much as followed ones (0.334).
Anchor Text Needs Less Variety Than You Think
Cyrus Shepard's September 2026 analysis of 50 sites found that pages losing traffic in recent Google updates had more varied external anchor text, at a correlation of -0.352. That's one case study, not a law. But it's a decent reason to stop engineering anchor "diversity" and let publishers describe your page the way they naturally would.
SEO Link Building Strategies That Still Work
The SEO link building strategies that still work in 2026 all earn links from editors who choose to give them. Digital PR, original data, link reclamation and editorial placements pass that test. Paid spots on sites that sell to anyone don't, and Google's SpamBrain update targets exactly those.
SEO link building strategies that work in 2026
| Strategy | Best for | Effort | Typical first result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Link reclamation | Recovering equity from deleted or redirected URLs | Low | Weeks |
| Original data and digital PR | Links from news and trade media | High | 1 to 3 months |
| Editorial guest contributions | Relevant links from niche publications | Medium | 1 to 2 months |
| Listicle placements | "Best X" queries and AI citations | Medium | 1 to 3 months |
Google's December 2022 link spam update said SpamBrain could "detect both sites buying links, and sites used for the purpose of passing outgoing links." That's why the table above leaves out anything sold off a price list. If you'd rather hand off the outreach, our SaaS link building agency runs these campaigns for B2B software companies.
How to Measure Link Building's Impact on SEO
Measure link building by what happens to the pages you built links to, not by your domain-wide backlink count. Track each target page's referring domains next to its ranking for one main keyword, then add the signups it drives once it reaches page one. Give every page three to six months before you judge it.
Most reporting goes wrong at the site level. A DR jump from 41 to 45 looks good in a monthly deck and says nothing about whether the pricing page moved. A plain sheet does better: target URL, main keyword, referring domains and position when you started, and the same two numbers today.
Add AI citations as a column. Run each page's main question in ChatGPT and Perplexity once a month and note whether your URL gets cited. Because authority tracks so closely with AI mentions in the Semrush data, a page that earns links is worth watching in both places. That's the part of SEO and link building most monthly reports still miss.
Link Building Mistakes That Hurt SEO
The link building mistakes that hurt SEO most are buying links from sites that sell to anyone and judging your profile by the wrong number. Both waste budget, and the first can lead to a manual action. Neither looks like a problem until rankings stall, which is why both survive for so long.
SAASY LINKS reviewed 300 unsolicited "guest post available" emails received in 2026: 64% of the offered sites already linked out to casino, CBD, payday loan or essay-writing sites. That's the neighborhood a cheap link puts you in. Our guide to buying backlinks covers how to vet a site before any money changes hands.
The quieter mistake is counting backlinks instead of referring domains. One sitewide footer link can produce 1,000 backlinks from a single domain. Count referring domains, then check which pages they actually point at.
The opposite panic costs money too. Tools that flag "toxic links" push teams into disavow projects they rarely need.
“The concept of toxic links is made up by SEO tools so that you pay them regularly.”
Google's help page says to disavow only when spammy links "have caused a manual action, or likely will cause a manual action, on your site." For most SaaS sites, that's never.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is link building in SEO?
Link building in SEO is getting other websites to link to your pages. Google treats relevant links as a sign of trust, so pages with stronger links tend to rank above similar pages without them.
Is link building still relevant to SEO in 2026?
Yes. Google's How Search Works page still names links from prominent sites as a quality signal, and Semrush found authority correlated with AI mentions at 0.65 across 1,000 domains.
How does link building help SEO?
It helps pages outrank similar competitors and helps Google find new URLs. Ahrefs found only about 1 in 6,671 pages with no referring domains got more than 1,000 monthly search visits.
How many backlinks do I need to rank?
There's no fixed number. Compare your page's referring domains with the top three results for the keyword, and if you have fewer than half, links are probably the gap.
Do nofollow links help SEO?
Less than followed links in Google, which has treated nofollow as a hint since 2019. In AI search, Semrush found nofollow links correlated with visibility about as much as followed ones.
How long does link building take to work?
Plan for months, not weeks. Ahrefs' study of 2 million keywords puts the usual wait at three to six months for competitive terms, though reclaimed links can move a page faster.
Is buying links against Google's rules?
Yes. Google's spam policies treat buying or selling links for ranking purposes as link spam, and SpamBrain has been able to detect sites buying links since December 2022.
