Linkable Assets: 9 Types That Earn Links in 2026

TL;DR
Linkable assets are pages other sites link to because they need them as a source: data studies, free tools, statistics roundups, rankings and similar. We pulled live Ahrefs data on 12 well-known examples in September 2026. Statistics roundups and free tools earned the most referring domains (HubSpot's marketing statistics page has 19,579), while templates earned the fewest links but plenty of traffic. Score each idea with the Link Gravity Score before you build it, spend the first 90 days promoting it to pages that already cite a weaker source, and pass the authority on to your money pages with internal links.

The exact 90-day playbook we run for clients
A linkable asset is a page other sites cite because it's the best source for something, usually a number or a tool. HubSpot's marketing statistics page has 19,579 referring domains, according to Ahrefs data we pulled on September 21, 2026. Nobody sent 19,579 outreach emails to get those.
Most link building strategies rent links one placement at a time. Linkable assets work the other way round. You build something once, promote it hard for a few months, and the links keep arriving long after you've stopped pitching.
But most of them flop. Below you'll find the asset types that still earn links, real link counts for each, and the scoring model we use to decide what's worth building.
What Is a Linkable Asset?
A linkable asset is a page built to earn backlinks on its own merit, because writers and journalists need to cite it. People also call it a link magnet. The test is simple: would someone writing about your topic link to this page even if you never emailed them? If not, it's just a blog post.
Every good asset gives the linker something they can't get elsewhere in one click. That could be an original number, a free tool, a template or a term that became the standard name for a method. The format matters less than the linker's motive. A writer adds your link because it makes their article more credible or saves their reader time.
Linkable Assets vs Link Bait
Link bait is content built to provoke a reaction, like a hot take or a publicity stunt. It earns a burst of links in the first few weeks and then goes quiet. A linkable asset earns links slowly and keeps earning them, because people keep needing it. Backlinko's Skyscraper Technique post is years old and still has 1,746 referring domains.
Why Linkable Assets Matter for SEO and AI Search in 2026
Linkable assets earn links without a per-link fee, and those links pass authority to the rest of your site through internal links. In 2026 they pay off twice. AI assistants cite the same stat pages and studies that writers link to, so one strong asset can feed Google rankings and AI answers at the same time.
The OppAlerts study of about 167,000 domains found that presence in Common Crawl, the open web archive many LLMs are trained on, correlates at +0.165 with AI visibility. Our read: pages that thousands of sites link to get crawled and copied into far more places than pages nobody references.
Then there's cost. Our monthly link building packages work out at $225 to $350 per placement. An asset that earns 50 referring domains in its first year beats that math easily. If it works.
9 Types of Linkable Assets (With 2026 Link Counts)
The nine asset types that earn the most links in 2026 are statistics roundups, free tools, rankings and awards, ultimate guides, original research, product-led data, visual data, coined terms and templates. SAASY LINKS pulled live Ahrefs referring-domain counts for a well-known example of each on September 21, 2026.
Referring domains and estimated monthly organic traffic for well-known linkable assets (Ahrefs, September 21, 2026)
| Asset type | Example | Referring domains | Est. monthly organic traffic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Statistics roundup | HubSpot Marketing Statistics | 19,579 | 5,750 |
| Free tool | Coolors palette generator | 18,466 | 1,023,772 |
| Rankings and awards | Forbes Billionaires list | 14,237 | 348,400 |
| Ultimate guide | Moz Beginner's Guide to SEO | 12,516 | 17,027 |
| Original research | HubSpot State of Marketing report | 11,864 | 1,921 |
| Rankings and awards | Inc. 5000 | 10,490 | 8,111 |
| Product-led data | Mailchimp Email Marketing Benchmarks | 5,272 | 4,543 |
| Free tool | CoSchedule Headline Analyzer | 4,702 | 2,758 |
| Visual data | Information is Beautiful: World's Biggest Data Breaches | 3,418 | 453 |
| Product-led directory | Zapier app directory | 2,596 | 7,845 |
| Coined term | Backlinko Skyscraper Technique | 1,746 | 540 |
| Template | Vertex42 personal budget spreadsheet | 119 | 1,212 |
Our view: one real asset per quarter beats 20 average blog posts a month. AI models don't cite volume. They cite the single best answer to a question, and writers behave the same way.
Statistics Roundups
Stat roundups topped our data. HubSpot's marketing statistics page has more referring domains than any other example we checked, because writers need a source for a number in a hurry and a roundup hands them 100 numbers on one page. The catch is upkeep. A roundup still quoting 2023 figures in 2026 loses its links to whoever refreshed theirs, which is why we update our own link building statistics page every year.
Free Tools and Calculators
Tools earn links because they do a job the linker's reader needs done. Coolors, a free color palette generator, has 18,466 referring domains and over a million organic visits a month. For SaaS teams this is the most natural asset, since you already employ engineers. A pricing calculator or a small checker built on your product's API can outlast any blog post, which is why we built a free domain rating checker instead of another listicle.
Rankings, Awards and Indexes
Rankings earn links from every company that appears on them. The Inc. 5000 has 10,490 referring domains and Forbes' Billionaires list has 14,237. Winners link to the list to show off their spot, so the people on it do most of your promotion. A SaaS company can run a smaller version, like an annual ranking of the fastest-growing tools in its category.
Ultimate Guides
A guide becomes an asset when other guides link to it for the basics. Moz's Beginner's Guide to SEO has 12,516 referring domains and still pulls around 17,000 organic visits a month. That took more than a decade of updates and a very early start, though. For a newer site, a guide only turns linkable in a narrow niche where nothing complete exists yet.
Original Research and Data Studies
Original research earns links because it creates a number nobody else has. HubSpot's State of Marketing report has 11,864 referring domains, and most of those links point at one stat a writer needed. You don't need HubSpot's budget. A survey of 200 customers can work if the headline finding fits in one sentence. Write that sentence before you collect any data. If you can't, the study won't get cited.
Product-Led Assets for SaaS
This is the type most guides skip, and SaaS companies are the best placed to build it. Mailchimp's Email Marketing Benchmarks page has 5,272 referring domains, and it's built on data Mailchimp collects from its own users. Zapier's app directory has 2,596, because every integration partner links to its own listing. If your product sees aggregated usage data, you can publish benchmarks no competitor can copy. And if you have integrations, a public directory gives every partner a reason to link.
Infographics and Visual Data
Infographics still earn links when the visual is the data. Information is Beautiful's World's Biggest Data Breaches chart has 3,418 referring domains because journalists embed it every time a new breach makes the news. In our experience, generic tips infographics stopped earning links years ago. If the graphic doesn't show data a reader can't find elsewhere, skip it.
Coined Terms and Frameworks
Name a method and every mention of that name points back to you. Brian Dean named the Skyscraper Technique, and Backlinko's post about it still holds 1,746 referring domains. A name only sticks if the method is useful enough that people repeat it. It's the reason every guide we publish includes a named framework, like the one further down this page.
Templates and Checklists
Templates are the weakest link earners on this list and one of the better traffic earners. Vertex42's personal budget spreadsheet has only 119 referring domains but gets about 1,212 organic visits a month. People download templates. They rarely cite them. Build a template when you want sign-ups, and don't count on it for links.
The Link Gravity Score: How to Pick an Asset Worth Building
The Link Gravity Score is SAASY LINKS' four-factor model for rating an asset idea before you spend money on it. Score each factor from 1 to 5 and add them up. Build ideas scoring 16 or more out of 20, cut the scope on anything from 12 to 15, and drop the rest.

The Link Gravity Score: four factors, each scored 1 to 5
| Factor | What it measures | Scores 1 when | Scores 5 when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Citation demand | How many pages already cite a weaker source on this topic | Fewer than 10 pages | 100+ pages cite an outdated or thin source |
| Copy cost | How long a competitor would need to rebuild it | An afternoon | Months, or it needs your private data |
| Shelf life | How long it stays accurate without a rewrite | Under 3 months | 2+ years with one annual update |
| Product fit | How close the topic sits to what you sell | Unrelated to your product | It can link straight to a money page |
Citation demand carries the most weight in practice. Search Google or Ahrefs Content Explorer for the stat or topic, then count the pages citing an old or thin source. Those pages are your score and your first prospect list at the same time.
Here's how it plays out. A SaaS churn benchmark report from a billing tool scores 5 + 5 + 3 + 5 = 18, so it gets built. A generic content tips infographic scores 2 + 1 + 3 + 2 = 8. Skip.
How to Create a Linkable Asset
Start with the people who'll link, then pick the format. Find pages that already cite a weak or outdated source, and build the better source they'd rather point to. Most teams do this backwards. They pick an infographic first and go looking for a topic afterwards.
Once you know who's linking, write the one-sentence finding people will quote, like "SaaS companies lose 3.1% of customers a month" (a made-up example). Put that sentence near the top, with the date and a short methodology note underneath. Writers need to trust the number before they'll cite it, and AI models lift single, self-contained sentences far more cleanly than claims buried in a paragraph.
Keep the asset ungated. Nobody links to a PDF behind an email form, and a form-gated study earns a fraction of the links an open page does. If you want leads from it, offer the raw data or a spreadsheet version as the download and leave the findings public.
Building a data study takes writers and analysts most SaaS marketing teams don't have spare. Our SaaS content marketing agency builds stat pages and research reports for B2B SaaS teams, with the promotion plan scoped in from day one.
How to Promote Linkable Assets So They Actually Get Links
Promotion is where most linkable assets die. Plan to spend as much time promoting an asset as you spent building it, with most of the effort in the first 90 days. Pitch the people who already cite the weaker source you're replacing, because they've shown they link on this topic and you're giving them a reason to update.
“"Create Once, Distribute Forever" started as a tweet. Now it's a strategy. Too many marketers overcreate and under-distribute. Double down on what already works. Milk your winners.”
What doesn't work is one template sent to every prospect. SAASY LINKS' outreach tracking shows generic templates get about a 4% reply rate, while hand-written emails that mention the prospect's own article get about 31%. You send fewer emails that way. You also get more links.
Watch for mentions too. Assets pick up citations without links all the time, and a short email asking the writer to add one converts far better than cold outreach. SAASY LINKS placed 1,400+ editorial brand mentions across 38 client campaigns in 2025 and turned 23% of unlinked mentions into links. The same playbook works for your asset's unlinked mentions.
If you'd rather hand the pitching to a team, our editorial link building service runs this outreach for SaaS assets and reports every live URL.
How to Pass Link Equity From Assets to Money Pages
Links to an asset only help revenue if the asset passes that authority on. Add two to four internal links from the asset to the product or service pages you want to rank, placed in the body near the finding people cite. Footer and sidebar links don't do this job well.
We keep these links inside the main content because that's the part of the page readers and crawlers actually follow. One link in the opening section, next to the headline stat, usually gets more clicks than the other three combined.
The opposite approach fails. Building 20 links straight to a broad informational post won't outrank Moz and HubSpot for a head term. Point the outreach at the asset, then let the asset feed the pages where the competition is beatable.
It's the same logic behind our SaaS link building campaigns. The asset earns the links, and internal links carry that authority to the pages that convert.
Put bluntly, an asset that sends authority nowhere is a vanity project. The high quality backlinks it earns only matter once they reach a page you'd be happy to rank.
How to Measure Linkable Asset ROI in 2026
Measure a linkable asset by cost per referring domain. Divide the full cost of building and promoting it by the new referring domains it earns in 12 months, then compare that with what placements cost. Also track rankings for the money pages it links to, because that's where the return shows up.
Illustrative cost per referring domain, year one (our estimates, not industry benchmarks)
| Approach | Upfront cost | Referring domains in 12 months | Cost per referring domain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paid placements (our packages) | $225–$350 per link | 1 per link | $225–$350 |
| Data study + 90 days of promotion | $6,000 | 40 | $150 |
| Free tool or calculator | $12,000 | 60 | $200 |
| Template | $1,500 | 5 | $300 |
Those asset numbers are our estimates from past projects, and yours will vary a lot. Placement prices vary too, by DR and niche, and our breakdown of link building cost shows the ranges we see in 2026. A tool that flops can cost $12,000 and earn nothing.
Why Most Linkable Assets Fail
Most assets fail because nobody needed them. The team picked a format, published it and sent one round of emails. Ahrefs found that 96.55% of the roughly 14 billion pages in its index get zero traffic from Google, and assets built without a prospect list usually join them.
The other killers are quieter. Data goes stale, and a 2024 benchmark stops earning links the moment someone publishes a 2026 one. Some assets have no single finding a writer can quote. Others hide behind a form. Scoring ideas before you build them catches most of these problems while they're still cheap to fix.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a linkable asset?
A linkable asset is a page built to earn backlinks because other sites need to cite it, like a data study, free tool, statistics roundup or industry ranking. It earns links for months or years without you paying for each one.
What is a link magnet?
Link magnet is another name for a linkable asset. Both describe a page that attracts backlinks on its merit rather than through paid or pitched placements.
What are some examples of linkable assets?
HubSpot's marketing statistics page (19,579 referring domains), the Coolors palette generator (18,466), Moz's Beginner's Guide to SEO (12,516) and the Inc. 5000 (10,490) are well-known examples. All counts come from Ahrefs in September 2026.
How long does a linkable asset take to earn links?
In our experience, the first links arrive within 2 to 4 weeks of active promotion, and most first-year links come during the first 90 days of outreach. Strong assets then keep earning links through search and citations without more pitching.
How much does a linkable asset cost to build?
Based on our project estimates, costs run from about $1,500 for a template to $10,000 or more for a custom tool or large survey. Judge the spend by cost per referring domain, not the upfront price.
What's the difference between a linkable asset and link bait?
Link bait aims for a short burst of links through controversy or entertainment. A linkable asset earns links steadily over time because people keep needing it as a reference.
Do linkable assets help with AI search citations?
Yes. In our experience, the pages writers link to are the same pages AI assistants cite, especially stat pages and original research. Keep each key finding in one dated sentence so models can quote it cleanly.
